Eleven giant pompoms occupy the inner city vacant space with a mesmerising sequence of swirling and lifting.
In this kinetic digital art installation, three rows of large pompoms like shapes are installed, hanging, in the space. Each pompom is made from red fabric which has been cut into ribbons on a laser machine and tied together. The pompoms are suspended from the ceiling from their crowns. In each crown a motor is fitted, which can rotate the Pompom left and right.
The pompoms have various different movements, depending on the speed of the motors. At times the pompoms swirl out, at times they twist. Sometimes they move independently, sometimes in unison. Their movement score has been choreographed using Arduino (a microcontroller and software).
Commissioned by the Christchurch City Council as part of ShoPop, an Enliven Places project aimed at activating the exciting new buildings being built in the central city.
